How Hezekiah’s Hands Got Started
Several members of The First Presbyterian Church of Towanda, PA began the ministry of Hezekiah’s Hands in 2003. This group had participated in both regional and overseas mission trips and had a desire to create similar opportunities for service closer to home. Soon they found that many in the Bradford County were in need of practical help that volunteers could provide.
One week in June is set aside as “Mission Week” for completion of projects. Each home is visited prior to the work date, and the project is evaluated for specific needs: time required, size of the work crew, materials, and skill level. Volunteers sign up in advance to help on one or more days during the work week. Projects and people are then matched based on the specific skills required.
At 7:30 AM on Monday of the designated work week, volunteers gather together, bringing tools, lunches, and lots of water! After a time of prayer, volunteers are assigned to their job sites. Materials are assembled and everyone sets out on their mission. Work for the day ends in time for the crew to gather for a “Family Meal” and devotions at 5:00 PM. Around the table, stories and joys are shared. The next day it all starts again.
Matthew 5:16: …let your light shine before men that they see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
